Road reagents are chemical substances or mixtures used to combat ice formation on roads and prevent slipping.
Their purpose is to lower the freezing point of water, which helps melt ice or prevent its formation.
Main types of reagents:
Salt (sodium chloride, NaCl)
The most common and affordable reagent. Effective at temperatures down to around -7°C. Used in pure form or mixed with sand.
Calcium chloride (CaCl₂)
Effective at lower temperatures (down to -25°C). Attracts moisture from the air, which accelerates the ice melting process.
Granite grit
Granite grit is crushed granite stone used as an anti-slip material.
